The Jorgmund Pipe is the backbone of the world, and it’s on fire. Gonzo Lubitsch, professional hero and troubleshooter, is hired to put it out. The job will take Gonzo and his unnamed sidekick – his chronicler and best friend – into places as strange and dangerous as any they have seen in a long and curious association. As they travel through the broken landscape of the Unreal World, the narrator recalls their first meeting, their bizarre schooling, his own conscription into a secret project, and the twists and turns which culminated in an apocalypse of a kind no one had imagined.

Gonzo and the narrator have taken divergent paths, always bound together, always opposed, to arrive at the same place as blood brothers. Now, in putting out the blaze which threatens everyone in the Livable Zone, they will be thrown into a new adventure which will test their friendship to the limit. Gonzo’s beekeeping father and titanic mother, the narrator’s beloved wife, and hundreds of others will be put at risk. A riddle will be unravelled, and a nearly forgotten murder will be avenged. And they will uncover the rotted heart of Jorgmund itself.
