‘Thirteenth-century Edinburgh comes off the page cool and convincing, from the smoke and noise of the tavern kitchen to Holyrood Abbey under a treacherous abbot. Most enjoyable’

FIRE IN THE FLINT is the second novel in the ‘Margaret’ series from the bestselling historical novelist Candace Robb, whose previous novels, the ‘Owen Archer’ series, have been bestsellers worldwide.
Summer, 1297, and Margaret Kerr is living in Edinburgh with her uncle Murdoch. She has come to search for her long-absent husband, Roger, who is in the service of Robert the Bruce. Margaret herself is still loyal to the deposed king John Balliol. But as she makes her search a brutal murder on the Kerr property brings the wrath of the English down on the heads of Margaret and her uncle.
The sudden reappearance of Roger gives Margaret the chance to escape from Edinburgh. Together they make for Perth, but soon she begins to suspect that Roger’s newfound enthusiasm for their marriage is nothing more than a foil for a mission for Robert the Bruce.
Margaret is troubled and confused when her father returns from Bruges, bringing trouble and discord in his wake. What was it the raiders sought from Margaret’s property? And what of her mother, Christiana’s visions which all sides are keen to interpret?
Can Margaret trust either her husband or her father...?
Candace Robb studied for a PhD in Medieval and Anglo-Saxon literature and has continued to read, research and lecture on medieval history and literature ever since. Her first collection of novels, the Owen Archer series, grew out of a fascination with the city of York and the tumultuous fourteenth century; the first in the series, THE APOTHECARY ROSE, was published in 1994, at which point she began to write full time. She has also written the successful Margaret Kerr series. There are now three Margaret Kerr novels, and ten Owen Archer novels.
