Penguin Press pre-empt closes down developing auction

Having often been asked to lecture to music students about the science behind music, the physicist, Dr John Powell, is now writing a highly accessible book for music fans of all stripes. HOW MUSIC WORKS will answer such questions as why two violins don’t sound twice as loud as one; how our ability to distinguish timbre lies in our evolutionary adaptation to distinguish predators (thus to work out whether the sound is being made by a small animal (rabbit is on the menu) or a tiger (I am on the menu)); or indeed why seismologists use cheap speaker cables.

When he’s not busy working as Visiting Professor of Physics at the University of Nottingham or at the University of Lulea in Sweden, Dr John Powell is himself a classical guitarist. Pre-empted on proposal by Helen Conford at Penguin Press, HOW MUSIC WORKS will be delivered in December 2009 for publication in 2010.
