What a Year

2009 has been a great year for Conville and Walsh, both for our staff and for our authors. In the office, Alex Christofi took over from Rob Dinsdale last January as Patrick Walsh’s assistant; Jake Smith-Bosanquet was appointed to the board of directors for his excellent work as head of our Foreign Rights department; and Jo Unwin is now a full-time member of the team.

It’s been a successful year for prizes across the board. We’ve seen recognition for both new and established authors, in fiction and non-fiction.

  • THE FORSAKEN won the Longman / History Today Award for best history title of the year.
  • DARWIN is shortlisted for the Costa Poetry Award, which will be announced on the 5th January 2010.
  • THE GIRL WITH GLASS FEET is shortlisted for the Costa First Book Award, as well as being longlisted for the Guardian First Book Award. The jacket design won the British Book Design and Production Award in the literary category.
  • THE SECRET LIVES OF BUILDINGS was also longlisted for the Guardian First Book Award.
  • HOW TO PAINT A DEAD MAN was longlisted for the Man Booker prize.

We’ve also had some almost unprecedented popular successes.

  • Richard Wiseman’s 59 SECONDS has been selling over a thousand copies a week since its release in July, and shows no signs of slowing.
  • We discovered the brilliant Rebecca James, whose debut novel, BEAUTIFUL MALICE, ‘isn’t merely to be published, but has become a publishing phenomenon that is sparking an aggressive bidding war world-wide’ (Wall Street Journal). It has now been sold in more than thirty countries, and is due for publication worldwide next year.
  • LOGICOMIX, the brainchild of Apostolos Doxiadis and his team, has found both popular and critical success. It has been a New York Times bestseller for ten weeks, and has spent most of that time as #1 in Graphic Paperbacks. It’s also, says the Sunday Times, ‘Probably the best and certainly the most extraordinary graphic novel I’ve ever come across.’

Now approaching its tenth birthday, Conville & Walsh is looking forward to another year of exciting new projects, so watch this space!
