Piers was born in Northumberland, which is possibly the one part of England where more animals live than people, and he spent his early years crawling around on the floor of the popular children’s bookshop that his mother ran.
His first story was written age 13, which starts - ‘Sam was a dog. And like most dogs, he was a detective.’
This should have led to a promising career in canine detective fiction but at school and university he became completely distracted by plays and comedy, leading to a career in theatre and live comedy at the Edinburgh Festival. However, after accidentally coming up with a successful gameshow, he moved into television, where he still works developing programme ideas and occasionally being allowed to make them.
Then, in a break between shows 3 years ago, he went on an Arvon course in West Yorkshire, and started to write a book…
