Edzard Ernst left his position as head of the Department of Rehabilitation Medicine at Vienna University in 1993, and joined Exeter University to become the world’s first Professor of Complementary Medicine. Having been raised in a family that made use of homeopathy, he had long been interested in – and learnt – many alternative and complementary medicines and therapies. Fascinated by how the field cried out for scientific investigation, he built up a research team in Exeter and started applying science to complementary medicine. He is currently writing a book with Simon Singh on alternative and complementary medicine.
